Parents – Controlling Your Anger

All parents get angry sometimes.  Lots of things can cause a parent to feel frustrated and angry - a bad day at work, financial concerns, or a child’s behavior.  When angry, a parent may respond to a child more harshly than needed.  Remember:

  • Words said while angry are hard to take back and have a significant impact on the child’s emotional well being.
  • When a parent controls their anger and works through a particular problem or behavior with their child, they are teaching their children the importance of self control and valuing others feelings.  They are also showing their child how to deal with a problem in a positive way.

If you feel that you are going to lose your temper consider the following:

  • Take a step back and calm down.
  • Take a walk or go to another room for some quite time.
  • Go do something physical like sweep the floor or wash dishes.
  • Take deep calming breathes
  • Explain to the child what you are doing and that you will discuss the situation with them when you calm down.
