Welcome to Florida's Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centers Program!

The major goal of the Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centers Program is to deliver optimal medical care to women with high-risk pregnancies and to sick/preterm newborns. Studies have indicated that maternal, fetal, and neonatal mortality rates can be reduced through early identification and early and continuous provision of specialized health care to pregnant women and newborns at high risk for disease, death, or disability.

Services

Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centers have been designated throughout the state in order to improve the delivery of perinatal care services through:

  • the concentration of high cost specialized health care and clinical expertise in designated hospitals in the state,
  • the provision of community- based consultative prenatal services, and
  • the provision of specific education for health care professionals involved with perinatal care.

Perinatal Education Programs

Numerous perinatal educational programs are offered at the centers and in community hospitals located throughout the state by center staff. Some of these include center-based obstetric and neonatal intensive care nursing courses and community-based one-day seminars for physicians and nurses.

Financial Resources

Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Center services are available to all patients requiring these services. The only valid grounds for refusal to admit a patient are the lack of functional bed space or lack of transportation. Ability to pay for services is not a consideration for admission of patients in need of obstetrical or neonatal intensive care services. Medicaid, medical insurance and family resources cover the cost of care for patients treated at the centers. Patients whose care is provided by the RPICC Program must meet certain medical and financial eligibility criteria.

Summary

The ultimate goal of the Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centers Program is to improve the outcome of pregnancy and the quality of life from birth. Since the inception of this program, Florida's neonatal mortality rate has been reduced from 13.6 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1974, to 4.9 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1999. Morbidity rates, or the quality of the survivors, have also improved. Florida has a model Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centers Program. The provision of these perinatal intensive care services has had, and continues to have, a beneficial impact on the quality of life for the residents of Florida.
