General Information Useful for Transition Planning

These transition resources cover a wide variety of transition subjects and cannot be listed under just one heading. The information in them includes educational laws and issues, vocational options, self-determination and independent living issues, legal issues, health issues, social services, and federal/state assistance programs.

Planning Ahead: A Handbook for Parents, Family Members and Guardians of Adults with Developmental Disabilities, Florida Developmental Disabilities Council -- July 2001. This 133 page document provides a wide range of information that is useful for transition planning and subjects include Government Benefits, Florida's Social Service System, Advocacy, Protecting Individual Rights, Estate Planning, Independent Living, and Employment. A free copy may be obtained by contacting the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council or by printing it from their website. The Arc of the United States -- The Arc is a national organization of and for people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities and their families. It is devoted to promoting and improving supports and services for people with mental retardation and their families. The association also fosters research and education regarding the prevention of mental retardation in infants and young children. Topics on the Information Page include The Americans with Disability Act (ADA), Education, Employment, and Self Determination/Self Advocacy.
