Regional
Genetics Programs
The Regional Genetics
Program is funded through contracts between Children's Medical Services
and the University of Florida, University of South Florida, and the University
of Miami. Services are provided by CMS consultant geneticists and board-certified
genetic counselors through center-based and CMS satellite clinics. In
CMS area offices, genetic clinics are held, monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly,
depending on the needs of the area. Services funded through the genetics
program contract include:
-
initial and follow-up
evaluation and diagnosis
-
lab studies required
for confirmation of genetic disorders, within available funding
-
patient consultations
in hospitals and clinics
-
dietary consultation
for treatment of PKU or galactosemia and
-
laboratory studies
to confirm metabolic screening disorders, at no cost to parents/caregivers.
-
Funds in the genetics
appropriation also support the R.C.Philips Unit at the University of
Florida. This program, authorized under s. 393.064, F.S., provides services
directed at preventing developmental disabilities.
